Snapchat may not be familiar to everyone, you may be asking yourself how does it work and how do I get started using it. I’ll walk you through the concept, setting up Snapchat and sending out your very first Snap to one lucky friend.
Note, the guide below is a brief intro to the world of Snapchat, you’ll want to play around with it as much as possible to get the hang of it and figure out how you like to use it the best.
Remember the cartoon Inspector Gadget? It featured a detective who was a cyborg and had an array of weaponry at his disposal and underneath his trench coat to help him solve cases and catch bad guys. One of the most memorable parts of each show occurred at the moment he received his mission for the day and he was always told that the message would now self-destruct. Snapchat is very similar to this. You are now the inspector and your messages will self-destruct. It can be a lot of fun! Here’s more about the ultra-popular messaging app.
What is Snapchat?
Snapchat is a social media app that allows you to share pictures, video, and now text to your friends. The primary concept that makes it different from other messaging services is that pictures and videos are deleted automatically after they are initially viewed.
A new feature in Snapchat now lets you send text messages through the app and have real time video chats similar to Skype while in the app. However, most people still use the app to send vanishing pictures of themselves doing something silly, or just showing off where they are.
How Does Snapchat Work?
First, you’ll want to download Snapchat by heading over to your App store on your iPhone, iPad, or Android. After installing the app, you will need to decide on a new username and set up your account. Make sure you tap yes when it asks if you want to sync your contacts on your phone with Snapchat. The app will find all of your contacts that already have a Snapchat account and will show you a list of people you can connect with.
After you have the Snapchat app set up and ready to go, you can start with taking a photo. Snap a photo of something or yourself. Afterward you will see the edit screen. You can swipe right or left to change the filter, tap the text button at the top right to add text and even add the weather by heading over to the Snapchat settings.
Once you’re finished, choose how long you want the picture to be available and tap the arrow to the right. From there, choose who to send the photo to from your list of contacts and you’re done. You’ve sent your first Snap!
