Here we cover tips on what should be done for each video uploaded to YouTube to make sure they are optimized for SEO. You can alter your YouTube video techniques to fit your personal goals but these are some general guidelines that will help get you started.
YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world, providing a huge tool to help publicize your brand, connect with an audience and share your great content. There are numerous benefits to using videos on your site and to help promote and share your content in a different method and to new users.
Videos are much more prone to go viral and are likely to be shared with people’s friends if it is memorable, funny, impactful, helpful, etc. Focus on creating amazing videos that people will want to pass on to their friends and family. You can make anything from short Vine clips to commercials to long narratives. Whatever is best to tell your personal or business story to your friends or potential customers. YouTube is a free and amazing way to utilize the power of video and to spread it worldwide.
Make sure you use a clear and descriptive tile of what is in the video. Use your target keywords. Adding words like how to, tutorial and video are helpful if applicable as your title is probably the most important SEO aspect of YouTube videos. For example if someone types into google how to tie a tie video google doesn’t necessarily look for videos, they look for a combination of sites and videos, if your video has the keyword video in it it will likely show up more. In addition, although this is speculation as Google doesn’t advertise how they rank videos using what I call title separators seems to help. For example: use colon, hyphen, parentheses, exclamation mark, etc.
These are a bit difficult as you don’t want to ask the viewer to “thumbs up” your video without having even watched it, but 3 out of 4 viewers don’t make it to the end of any given video on YouTube. I would suggest adding an annotation to the beginning with something like check out www.yourwebsite.com for FREE tutorials. This will aim to increase your click through rate from YouTube to your Website. Also, add annotations to the last 15 seconds or so of the video asking for the viewer to share or thumbs up your video.
Add 2-3 sentences at the beginning of the description making sure to use your target keywords. After that I would suggest linking to your personal website, your Facebook, Twitter, Google+ accounts, etc. I wouldn’t write a super long description based on experience this doesn’t seem to help. You can bulk add preset descriptions in the settings so that when you upload a video it will save time.
A great thumbnail can make a huge difference. Try to replace the thumbnail with a simple image, clear of clutter and interesting. This can hugely increase click through rates to your YouTube video.
Add tags that are appropriate, you can add standard tags to all videos you upload. Add any keywords that are applicable to the content of your video. Tags seems to be the least important on getting your videos ranked but still good to do.
Upload the video transcript if there is one available for the video. This allows Google to get an idea of what type of content is in the actual video. You can hire companies to transcribe your videos for a per minute fee. Probably not worth it unless you are primarily working with video content.
Embedded Video Format
If you add: ?rel=0&iv_load_policy=3&showinfo=0 to the YouTube embedded videos after the web address but before the frameborder code (example below). This does three thing, makes it so “suggested videos” don’t show up on the embedded video on your website (rel=0), removes the annotations from the embedded video (iv_load_policy=3) and removes the title bar at the top of the embedded videos (amp;showinfo=0).
<iframe width=”680″ height=”383″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/XXXXX?rel=0&iv_load_policy=3&showinfo=0” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen></iframe>
That’s it, you’re done optimizing your YouTube videos for both YouTube views and embedded on your website. Do you have any other suggestions, leave a comment below?
